Snorkel set parts and attachments

Parts of a Snorkel set

Three main parts of a snorkel set mostly used in snorkeling.

  1. Glasses / Mask (Used to see underwater things)
  2. Tube (this is an elastic Pipe to breathe)
  3. Fins (to move faster underwater)

Glasses / Mask (Used to see underwater things)

Glasses are a very important part of snorkel set. Snorkel glasses are of different types, sizes, shapes, and colors. Each style allows additional functionality and benefits. The most mask provides you with a 180-degree Panoramic View. Some Glasses cover your eyes, and some cover your whole face.

Tube (this is an elastic Pipe to breathe)

Tube is also an essential part snorkeling set. The tube has three types depending upon its functionality.

  1. Wet (old classical one)
  2. Sami-Dry (advance)
  3. Dry snorkel (very advance)

Wet (old classical one)

This is a very simple type of snorkel. Intake and exhaling occur at the same single point. Water may also come in this type of snorkel. You must use your lung’s power to expel water from the tube.

This type of snorkel has three basic parts, common in all other advanced types of snorkels.

The parts are these.

  1. Mouthpiece (to breathe)
  2. Clip/hook (to attach with mask)
  3. Tube

Mouthpiece (to breathe)

The mouthpiece is made of good silicone. Different brands invented a variety of mouthpieces to increase usability and comfort. Some moderate mouthpieces have special extra soft biting tabs customizable to fit your teeth. We can replace part of the snorkel set.

It’s important to maintain your jaws relaxed. The mouthpiece should be the exact size of your mouth.

Clip/hook (to attach with mask)

Many advanced snorkels have fancy clips which provide quick attachment and removal. The simple snorkel Catcher is still the best attachment method in my personal view. Snorkel keepers are simply two silicone rings connected in the middle as in the shape of digit 8.

The Tube

The tube is the basic path from where the air goes in and out. The old and simple snorkel has a straight tube with the shape of the English alphabet “J.” However, modern snorkels have many advanced features and are very comfortable to fit around the face.

Despite its design, the main goal of a snorkel tube is to facilitate gaseous exchange between your mouth and surface air while keeping your face submerged beneath the water.

Sami-Dry (advance)

A semi-dry snorkel is an intermediate between a wet and dry snorkel. It has some additional parts as compared to wet-snorkel.

  1. Splash guards (for water controlling)
  2. Flex tubes (to adjust tube)
  3. Purge valves (to drain water)

Dry snorkel (very advance)

As the name refers to, dry-snorkel is completely dry. No water goes inside the tube, and no cleaning is required. This type of snorkel has a special valve (Float Valve). Under the water, this valve is completely closed, whereas when at the surface of the water, this valve opens again, and you can breathe here.

Fins (to move faster underwater)

These are optional part of the snorkel set. Many expert snorkelers don’t like to wear them. But Fins help you in many ways underwater. They provide you with fast and quick movements underwater. These are also of different colors, sizes, and shapes. They are available in small, medium, and large sizes. For kids’ small size is preferable.
